Retractable Awnings: You Can Control the Weather!

Awnings let you take control of the weather on your deck or patio - in less than a minute. Whether manually operated or motorized, an awning can transform your deck or patio into a beautiful semi-permanent "outdoor room".

Awnings keep your family, pets and patio furniture cool and protected from hot sun, showers, or harmful UV rays far better than an umbrella or other shade device. It can be as much as 20 degrees cooler under an awning. A passing shower won't spoil your outdoor plans either. You can relax or entertain outdoors rain or shine. An awning gives you generous coverage and protection. Yet when you want to enjoy the sun, your awning retracts back against your house, giving you full use of your deck or patio with unobstructed views.

6 Benefits of Retractable Awnings

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Exterior retractable awnings (patio and deck covers) that feature solution dyed acrylic fabric can reduce interior heat in your home during periods of sunlight by 77 percent according to a study by the American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Research has shown that energy efficiency, shade and lowering of your electric bill are the most important reasons to purchase retractable awnings, patio covers, or a sun protection system.

AESTHETICS
Aesthetics, elegance and beauty are the main features of our complete line of retractable awnings, patio covers and deck awnings. Our fade-resistant fabrics come in a variety of colors and styles to complement any style of home and landscape.

FADING
Retractable awnings retain room brightness, and at the same time protect INDOOR furniture, carpeting, wallpaper and other furnishings from fading. Retractable awnings also protect OUTDOOR furniture fabric from fading.

NO MAJOR CONSTRUCTION COSTS
Retractable awnings are like adding a room to your house, without any major construction costs…no general contractor or architect is needed. In addition, retractable awnings are also significantly less expensive than permanent construction.

WATER RESISTANCE
Retractable awnings with water-resistant fabrics help keep the rain off the patio, deck, terrace, balcony, poolside, driveway or Jacuzzi.

INCLEMENT WEATHER & SNOW
In the event of inclement weather, retractable awnings can be closed so the awnings are not damaged by high winds, hail or large amounts of heavy rain. Retractable awnings can be closed in the winter. Permanent (fixed) awnings cannot be rolled up and therefore a weight problem can occur when the snow collects on the awning fabric, creating a potential for collapse. Retractable awnings can be used to shade a house, cover open patios, windows or entryways. By providing shade, they protect windows and doors from the strength of the sun.

Tips and Ideas

Deck Railings: The Finishing Touch

Deck railings provide the finishing touch for your new deck. Safety, of course, is the practical consideration behind the installation of deck railings; however, when planning your deck and selecting a deck rail style, consider the style and materials used in your home. The deck itself can be either wood or composite depending on your preferences, but the rail should harmonize with your home's overall character. Choosing wisely from among the various deck railing styles is critical to the project from a design perspective.

Sources of deck or porch rail ideas include other homes in your neighborhood, especially if one of your neighbors has done something exceptionally creative. Home and garden magazines can often be a rich source of inspiration. Home shows are a terrific way to see the materials. Last, but not least, contact us for help in finding the perfect solution for your home.

Wood
Pressure treated wood rails and balusters remain the traditional and practical choice for homeowners who choose to invest in a wood deck. Depending on local building codes, decorative railing panels such as a sunburst or Chippendale panel can be inserted for interest, and character. Planters, benches, and arbors can be incorporated to create outdoor rooms as well as provide security. Like your wood deck, wood deck rails will need to be periodically cleaned and maintained to preserve the wood’s natural beauty.

Iron
Iron balusters are an alternative whose aesthetic appeal cannot be denied when combined with wood rails. Local building codes will determine how close the balusters need to be in order to prevent a safety hazard for small children and pets.

Composite and Vinyl
Composite and vinyl deck railings are virtually maintenance-free and are a must when choosing a composite or vinyl deck. They don’t split, rot or splinter, never need painting and retain their beauty season after season. Combine with a pergola or arbor to create the ultimate space for outdoor dining.

Plexiglas
Plexiglas is a new option. It lasts longer than wood and it provides a nearly seamless view of your property. It almost looks like you don't have a railing at all. Plus, since there is no way to squeeze through the rails, it is safe for young children. Another modern look is tempered glass or acrylic installed between metal or wooden posts. Transparent and simple, there is virtually nothing to impede a view. Contact us to find out which of these new options may be available in your area.

When you consider the infinite number of possibilities of materials and how they might be worked, it becomes obvious that there is no reason you can't create the deck railing of your dreams. With a little research and planning, you can combine new materials with old, and high style with fun.
