Fix Your Sun Damaged Wood Fence

Sun Damaged Wood Fence

Over the years, the environment itself can beat down your beautiful wooden fence. The harsh sunlight can do some serious damage to wood fences. If it is not taken care of, homeowners may find themselves with a sun damaged wood fence.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to protect your fence. A few critical maintenance steps can keep your wood fence looking as good as the first day the Long Fence crew installed it. If you don’t want to bother, give us a call and ask about our fence repair service!

Here are a few of the tricks we like to recommend to homeowners.

Sun Damaged Wood Fence Repair Step 1: Vegetation

First things first, you’re going to want to get rid of any vegetation that might be growing around, on, or over the wood fence. Just be sure to avoid damaging the pickets as you work, since removing them too forcefully can split and pull brackets out of the rails if you’re not careful. Some of the brackets may also have come loose over time, so be sure to nail them back in.

Sun Damaged Wood Fence Repair Step 2: Power wash

The next thing you’re going to want to do is power wash both sides of the fence with a fan tip sprayer. This removes the layer of dead wood cells, revealing the beautiful, fresh wood just underneath. Be sure to keep it at least 36-inches away, otherwise you might damage your fencing, and use a cleaning solution, too. Once you’re done, let it dry for at least 24 hours.

Sun Damaged Wood Fence Repair Step 3: UV stain

Now that the fencing has been cleared of all that creeping vegetation and it’s back to its healthy state, it’s time to apply some protection to it. Brush or spray a UV blocking stainer to it, and make sure it penetrates the surface of the wood. Don’t deviate from the stainer’s instructions.

This should keep your wood fencing looking great for years to come if you do it right. If you have any questions, feel free to share in the comments.
